Educational programs focus on strengthening individuals, families and communities by addressing critical issues and needs, such as teaching parenting skills, improving nutrition and health, managing family finances, addressing child care needs, and others.
Family and Consumer Sciences provides programming and research-based information in the following four areas below.
Strengthening individuals and families through education to enhance their emotional, social, and personal development.
Family Economics
Teaching individuals and families skills for resource management and for building and protecting wealth over the life cycle.
The Tennessee Housing Development Agency (THDA) has a spectrum of programs such as Homebuyer Education which will provide Downpayment Assistance to those who qualify based on income including First-Time Homebuyers, Repeat Homebuyers, and Military. Health and Safety
Empowering Tennesseans to manage their health and healthcare in order to live, work, and learn in safe and healthy environments.
Programs Offered vary throughout the year, but have included: Stay Strong Stay Healthy, Walking with Ease, Tai Chi for Arthritis, Walk Across Tennessee, Catch My Breath (Anti-Vaping), and May Marathon

The Stay Strong, Stay Healthy program focuses on improving the health and wellbeing of older adults. The goal of the program is to provide safe, structured and effective strength training for older adults. Stay Strong, Stay Healthy is an evidence-based program that has been shown to increase strength, balance and flexibility.
Walk Across Tennessee is a team-based walking program. The teams of eight people are encouraged to accumulate walking miles to virtually travel the distance across Tennessee (about 500 miles) over an eight-week period. The number of persons in each team and the duration of the program can be less. Team members do not have to walk together. Some may prefer to walk, while others bike, swim, garden or do other types of physical activity.
Nutrition and Food Safety
Promoting self-responsibility for health by providing research-based nutrition and food safety education to consumers.
Programs Offered vary throughout the year, but have included: Canning Classes, Dining with Diabetes, Cooking Matters, Cooking with Honey: Nature’s Sweetener, and Instant Pot & Air Fryer Demonstration Classes.
Take Charge Of Your Diabetes
A six-week evidence-based program that helps individuals take day-to-day responsibility for their diabetes care. Participants gain skills necessary to self-manage their diabetes and work effectively with their healthcare professionals.
Dining with Diabetes
What is Dining with Diabetes? Dining with Diabetes is an Extension health and wellness program that consist of a series of three to four classes that includes learning, demonstrations, physical activity and tasting healthy foods. The program’s focus is to help individuals learn strategies to lessen the health risks of diabetes.
Dining with Diabetes is a hands-on learning program designed to teach practical skills needed to comply with the health care provider’s instructions. Food demonstrations included in each lesson to teach quick-and-healthy cooking techniques. Participants also learn how to count the amount of carbohydrates in food, how to modify recipes to reduce calories, carbohydrates and fat and how to plan a balanced diet for specific calorie level.
Canning College
A hands-on series of workshops on canning jams and jellied products, pickles and acidified foods, fermentation, tomatoes, and low-acid foods.
